Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish became first-time fathers after their surrogate mother delivered a healthy baby boy on Christmas day.

The couple announced the birth of little Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John late on Monday, Dec. 27. In a joint statement to Us Magazine, the pair gushed, "Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents ... We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment."

A representative for the couple has stated that Sir Elton and his partner intend to protect the privacy of their surrogate, but revealed the tot -- who weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces at birth -- was born in California.

Elton John and his partner David Furnish were denied the chance to adopt a 14-month-old HIV-positive child from the Ukraine last year because the pop star was deemed too old and was considered single by local officials. John fell in love with the child during a tour of an orphanage, but the Ukraine's Family, Youth and Sports Minister, Yuriy Pavlenko, ruled adoption was out of the question for the 'Rocket Man,' who, at 62, was almost 20 years older than the country's age limit for becoming a parent to an orphan. Pavlenko also refused to acknowledge Sir Elton and Furnish's legal civil union in Britain.

What a sad thing that these rules (age limits) while beneficial in normal circumstances, just serve to hurt those with special needs. Clearly EJ was coming from a place of love in his desire to adopt the little HIV pos. boy, and also from a more capable place from the standpoint of being able to meet the needs without suffering from a financial burden. I hope one day, countries, and agencies that precide over these issues will drop aside their cookie cutter regulations and view the needs of these children as individuals. If they could have focused on the boy's needs he would be with EJ and his partner. On a lighter note, I congratulate them on their "family" and its' upcoming addition!
