A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life is an intimate look at a 12-to-24-hour window into many of the biggest artists making music today. This fun-filled documentary presents a side of a musician's daily ins and outs that is rarely seen by the public. Because of the small size of the crew that captures these stars in action on video, with still photos and in their own words, it's possible to show their most casual and relaxed interactions and adventures.
Martina McBride is constantly asked how she balances her career with being a mom of three. It's a juggling act she has perfected, and one for which she feels eternally grateful. The Boot had the opportunity to see firsthand how the songstress pull it all off, as we were invited to join her in Austin, Texas, before her show at the state-of-the-art Moody Theater at Austin City Limits Live.

It's just after noon on Saturday, February 18, a sunny and unseasonably warm day in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Rascal Flatts will play the last show of their winter tour. As our crew pulls into the Izod Center's parking lot, it's hard to miss all nine tour buses in the Flatts' fleet, along with the big tractor trailers housing their massive set. It's a traveling city hard-earned by the superstar country trio of Jay DeMarcus, Gary LeVox and Joe Don Rooney.

Diggy Simmons, a New York native who's eagerly spreading the word about his debut album, Unexpected Arrival, which The BoomBox was witness to on March 19, has been confronted with naysayers and skeptics challenging his lyrical abilities all because he grew up with a famous father, Rev Run of Run-DMC, and lives an affluent lifestyle. The 17-year-old rapper has a story to tell like every hip-hop veteran before him. Take a look at how he shares his story.

"Exciting day now, huh?" says Flaming Lips tour manager Chris, with an I'm-used-to-it smirk, as he supervises load-in at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square where his band is headlining Spinner's free daylong NXNE concert. There is, of course, no way he could've known how darkly prophetic his words would become when, in a few hours from now, tragedy will strike on the north side of the city where Radiohead is setting up for their own concert.

"I don't have a home right now," Wale tells The BoomBox. This statement coming from a man who banks big bucks from concert performances and scored opening week sophomore sales of 164,062 units sold for his 'Ambition' LP. "I'm living out of a suitcase literally," he admits. "The suitcase blues." As the 27-year-old Washington, D.C. native begins to comically sing, "I got the blues, suitcase blues," the tone in his voice reveals that there's more beatitude in his life than melancholia, considering he travels nationwide via a mega tour bus doing work that he loves -- spreading his brand of raps.

"Our tour family is our family," says the proud 'papa' of Sugarland's traveling brood, Kristian Bush. "It's a family of choice, a family of like-minded people." "It's taken us a little while to form the whole team," adds Kristian's partner, Sugarland's vocal powerhouse Jennifer Nettles, who's more like a cool big sister than mama bear to the family. "We travel with 40 or 50 people. It's a lot of positions to fill on a skill level, but also personalities to fill on a personal level. You want to make sure that matches, too."

"It's a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon in New York City's West Village. At around 4:45 PM, after an hour of strolling around, we figure we're numb to the beauty of our surroundings -- the luxurious townhouses, the leggy model-types -- but then a black SUV pulls up in front of the Marc Jacobs store, and out step the members of Blondie. "I slept a little bit," Luke Bryan admits at 7:35 AM on August 9, 2011, the morning of the release of his third studio album, 'Tailgates & Tanlines.' Luke, who has already squeezed in an early morning workout, sits in his dressing room, prepping for a performance on 'LIVE! With Regis & Kelly' at ABC's studios on New York City's Upper West Side. "It's a little too perfectly round and poofy," he jokes, examining his hair in the vanity table mirror. Darren Criss barely has time to think, since the wildly popular 'Glee' star joined the cast in early November.
