Rebecca Black Is the New Meme on the Block

YouTube

Rebecca Black has been taking the internet by storm. The YouTube sensation's song 'Friday' hit nearly six million views today (March 13) after the world discovered Black's comical tween anthem.

The thirteen-year-old's strange voice alone can't account for the magnetic digital draw to her performance. Produced by Ark Music Factory in Los Angeles, the video for 'Friday' possesses normative adolescent qualities. A girl wakes up for school on the verge of the weekend, and she is so ready to party.

But what is different about 'Friday' as opposed to other pop songs is that it is a direct dictation of the singer's day, a tactic which will undeniably cause you to remember each and every lyric.

"Gotta have my bowl/Gotta have cereal..." followed by "Gotta get down to the bus stop/Gotta catch my bus/I see my friends," are almost ordinary lyrics next to the genius of the chorus and bridge section of the song in which Black repeats "fun, fun, fun" and subsequently sings the days of the week – in order.

Though the song is formulaic at best, it's not stopping a trove of new listeners flocking to see what the fuss is all about.

It might be popular with the really, really young kids. It seemed like the music over took her voice, made her sound squeaky. Can she sing without all that music?

I find it sort of comical how the author words his article in this post, using words such as "tactic" and "genius".(No offense to said author intended) Personally, I don't think the repetition of her lyrics causes anyone to listen more than once, other than to show a friend how ridiculous this particular song is and the disbelief of listeners that the song is famous in any degree. To be honest, I believe that is the majority of this artist's popularity with this song... other people saying "can you believe this is famous?!".
