The thirteen-year-old's strange voice alone can't account for the magnetic digital draw to her performance. Produced by Ark Music Factory in Los Angeles, the video for 'Friday' possesses normative adolescent qualities. A girl wakes up for school on the verge of the weekend, and she is so ready to party.
But what is different about 'Friday' as opposed to other pop songs is that it is a direct dictation of the singer's day, a tactic which will undeniably cause you to remember each and every lyric.
"Gotta have my bowl/Gotta have cereal..." followed by "Gotta get down to the bus stop/Gotta catch my bus/I see my friends," are almost ordinary lyrics next to the genius of the chorus and bridge section of the song in which Black repeats "fun, fun, fun" and subsequently sings the days of the week – in order.
Though the song is formulaic at best, it's not stopping a trove of new listeners flocking to see what the fuss is all about.
