What was your reaction to being booked to sing for TLC's coverage of the Royal Wedding?
I don't know if Kate and Will heard my song and they wanted it for their wedding or if TLC thought it would be good for their coverage. I just know that everybody thinks that my song 'I Do' is a wedding song and this year it's going to be everyone's wedding song. I don't know how it happened but I was just honored and of course, I wanted to do it.
As you said, your song 'I Do' has been received as a wedding song, but that's not what you originally planned. Are you OK with this assumption?
The only time I was annoyed with it was when we were going to do the video shoot. Every single director who sent treatments in [made it] all [about a] wedding dress, or me at the altar or me dreaming about a wedding. And I was like, "No. Come on, if you understood the song then you'd know it wasn't about that." But honestly, songs are for people to take however they want and to relate them to whatever is going on in their own lives. So if someone wants to have it at their wedding, I think that's cool if they want my song to be a part of their day.
You said in an interview with PopEater that you would never want a big wedding ceremony for yourself because you don't care for them. Why did you agree to be a part of one of the biggest wedding ceremonies imaginable?
Well, just because I don't want it doesn't mean it's not OK or that I don't believe in it. All of my friends want huge weddings -- they want huge wedding dresses and the day all about them. I think that's fine. People who don't have that every day in their normal lives, they should be able to have that. It's fun for them. But for me, I'm onstage everyday, I get uncomfortable being in the spotlight and being asked questions and singing for people. So, to be in that personal state where you're professing love to that person ... I don't want an audience, I just want it to be me and him and like two other people.
Who are the other two people?
Well my best friend Brianna and my sister. And, of course, parents, but I don't want more than 10 people max -- if that.
And who is the "him"? Do you have plans to marry your boyfriend, the guitarist from your band?
Justin [Kawika Young], yes. We want to marry each other and spend the rest of our lives together, but we're not planning on getting engaged soon or planning a wedding or anything. I could marry him tomorrow, but it's just that we don't really need to do that anytime soon. When it happens I'll be happy though.
So who would sing for you at your wedding?
Whoever it was, they would perform one of my favorite Lauryn Hill songs or maybe one of my favorite John Mayer songs -- or Al Green.

Are you two planning on having kids?
Well yes, but in the far future.
As you said, you're always in the spotlight for work, but that's not what you're about when it comes to your personal relationships. How has fame affected your romantic life?
It hasn't because I've only dated two people since my career started. The first person I dated I was with before I even got signed, so we were always friends and I didn't have to worry about anything. Justin I also knew before I was signed and he was in my band, so I never had to deal with wondering why someone was with me or if they like me for the right reasons. I definitely could see how it could be really difficult for people ... that's why people date within their industry because you know that person has the same lifestyle as you and they understand it. You also can just feel it if you're questioning whether someone is good or not good for you.
Any dating advice?
Go with your gut with anything. Be with someone that makes you happy -- that takes care of you, who looks out for your best interests and who you feel comfortable and can be yourself around.
And for the royal couple?
I hope that they enjoy their wedding and have a wonderful life together. They've already been together for so long -- I think it's great when people get married after knowing each other for a long time. It's even cuter when people wait a long time to get married and still want to marry each other.
So what are you planning on wearing for your TLC performance in Times Square? Anything wedding-themed or bridesmaid-inspired?
No. I don't want to because we're airing right after they kiss and you're not suppose to wear white on someone else's wedding day -- so no, I don't want to do that. I have no idea what I want to wear, but I usually bring like 10 options and pick one about 20 minutes before I go on. When I have big events I have a stylist, Anthony Franco. He's wonderful. Otherwise, I do my own hair and I pick out my clothes. My makeup artist helps me pick out outfits like a friend would. I like shopping ... it's fun being a girl.
