McPhee was cast in NBC's upcoming musical pilot, 'Smash'. The network's answer to 'Glee' is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg and follows the production of a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. McPhee will sing in the show.
'Smash' hasn't even aired yet, but there's already an album in the works. It's been announced that Columbia Records has won the rights to the music from NBC's upcoming mid-season musical drama series.
The music will include covers of existing hits plus original songs composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the team behind 'Hairspray' and 'Catch Me If You Can.'
It was also announced that McPhee has signed a solo recording deal with Columbia Records. She previously recorded for RCA and Verve Forecast.
Speaking about the deal, Robert Greenblatt, Chairman NBC Entertainment, said "A musical series should naturally be accompanied by a soundtrack deal, and NBC is very excited to be working with the best. Our Columbia Records partners will guide the soundtrack of 'Smash' into a big component of the show's success. The music will be a driving force ... and we couldn't have asked for better expertise and strategy than this company will provide."
The series stars Debra Messing ('Will & Grace'), Anjelica Huston ('Prizzi's Honor') and Jack Davenport ('FlashForward'). McPhee plays a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty who finds herself vying for the lead role against a stage veteran played by 'Wicked' star Megan Hilty.
'Smash' is due to premiere in January 2012, airing Mondays at 10PM ET on NBC.
