During the MTV VMA pre-show, it was announced that opening performer Lady Gaga had won the 'Best Video With a Message' award at the 2011 VMAs. The pop starlet has always encouraged her "little monsters" to be themselves, regardless of their sexual orientation, shape or size -- and it was the video for 'Born This Way' that sent her album of the same name to the top of the charts.

Gaga beat out Eminem and Rihanna's 'Love the Way You Lie,' Taylor Swift's 'Mean' and several others for the top title.

The cinematic video for 'Born This Way' finds Mother Monster musing on the beginnings of good and evil and rocking prosthetic shoulder attachments and triangular cheek bones.

Stay tuned for our continuing coverage of the 2011 MTV VMA Awards!
