The singer showed up dressed in drag, as her alter ego Jo Calderone, a self-proclaimed "regular guy" and New Jersey native, whose parents are from Palermo, Sicily. Unlike Gaga, Calderone is not a fan of the spotlight and used more than a few expletives when answering inquiries about why he opted to show up instead of Gaga. "She's just really f---ing pissed at me right now," he told AOL Music. "She said, 'F--- you, if you really love me, you'll go instead of me, and you'll get in that spotlight.' So I did."
Calderone is also not shy when it comes to expressing his adoration for Britney Spears. While presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Calderone revealed that he's long had a crush on the pop princess, and if given the chance, he'd like to make something happen. "Well maybe if she wants to," he said. "She's f---ing hot. Gaga's my girl but Britney's f---ing... you know, she's f---ing Britney Spears. Didn't you jerk off to Britney when you were a kid?"
Drag or not, it was still a big night for Gaga, and even though she wasn't technically around to share in the joy, she brought home three moonmen, including the award for Best Female Video.
