'Glee,' 'Asian F' Recap -- Season 3, Episode 3

GleeFOX

Last week's 'I Am Unicorn' was setting up for something big -- and 'Glee' totally delivered. While it's not my favorite episode ever, it definitely seems to echo the glory days of Season 1.

But what made 'Asian F' so great? Three things: A Mike Chang storyline (FINALLY!), more screen time for Mercedes and actual character development (... FINALLY!). I know there are still a few naysayers that have "sworn off 'Glee' forever," but this might seriously turn into the show's best season yet. However, only time will tell if Ryan Murphy & Co. can keep the momentum going.

We come to find out that McKinley High isn't just a school where everyone sings, dances and slushies each other -- it's actually a legit learning facility. Who knew? Well, apparently Mr. Chang did because he seemed all sorts of unhappy when Mike received an A- (aka an 'Asian F') in chemistry class. So he gives his son an ultimatum: get an A, quit 'Glee' or break up with Tina.

Um, 'Tiger Dad', anyone? At least Mike and his mother share a few adorable scenes together.

But what about the musical number Mike prepared for his 'West Side Story' audition?

You see, Tina spent her summer coaching Mike to be a better singer. There's a reason Mike and Tina are my favorite Asian couple on prime time -- and not just because they're the only one. Just when Mike is feeling discouraged, Tina sets him straight. "When I watch you dance, it's why I fell in love with you." Awww ... move over, Klaine! This episode really solidified their relationship as something more than just an ethnic gag.

Did I mention that Mike can sing now? Like, legit sing? In fact, his rendition of the 'West Side Story' classic 'Cool' is one of the highlights of the episode. Needless to say, he makes the cut, so it looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of Mike this season. But what about his girl Tina? She's the most neglected member of the entire cast. When's her episode, Murphy?

Meanwhile, Kurt is still campaigning for class presidency, and just because he's going up against the deliciously daft Brittany, he thinks he has it in the bag. That is, until Brittany unveils her new campaign strategy.

And so starts another 'Glee' flashmob. How do these Cheerios ever have time to practice Sue's routines if they're always doing the Carlton with Blaine and running the world with Brittany? See, Ryan Murphy, these are the plot holes that matter!
