On This Day in Pop Music History ...

Backstreet BoysTim Roney | Hulton Archive

Before teaming up with New Kids on the Block to form the mega "man band," NKOTBSB, the Backstreet Boys were one of the biggest boy bands in history. BSB popularity came close to Beatles mania, and on this day back in 1997, that fan hysteria virtually shut down central Madrid. Brian, Howie and the rest of the guys were scheduled to perform a free concert in Madrid's central square, but were forced to cancel the appearance after more than 7,000 fans showed up to the location that could hold no more than 5,000. The day was sweltering hot and more than 300 girls had to be treated after fainting in the heat. Forget Bieber Fever, back then it was all about BSB Fever!
