Jason Derulo -- A Day in the Life

"B---- I'm a Star," his screen printed T-shirt reads in bold white letters under his leather motorcycle jacket. His Marc Jacobs sunglasses are as functional as they are stylish -- he only got four hours of sleep last night, after all. It's 8:40AM on Sept. 28, and Jason Derulo has just arrived at the WKTU radio station in New York for his first interview of the day.

Come February, Derulo will hit the road, traveling to Europe, Australia and then the U.S. for his upcoming tour. But for now, "I'm in promotion mode," he says while sipping on a venti Starbucks chai latte. "I overcome my sleep deprivation with coffee. Well, not coffee anymore, chai teas ... Starbucks, you should pay me for this. I have a chai latte every single day probably like three or four times per day," Jason admits. "These days I don't even have time to nap, they kind of put my schedule so I have a lot of stuff back-to-back, like phoners in the car. But let's see if I can get a nap today!" There was no napping for Jason that day.

As he starts on his second chai latte of the day, Jason reveals his Andy Warholian habit of systematically eating the same thing everyday for extended periods of time. "It's really weird how I just go through these phases of things that I just can't get enough of. It's almost like obsessive. Once I find something that I like I kind of just stick onto it," he admits between sips. "So maybe I need to find that girl, so I can stick onto her," the 22-year-old 'It Girl' singer adds with a smile.

And speaking of 'It Girl,' what about those Jordin Sparks dating rumors? A question that arose during every single interview that day. "We're just good friends. She's a sweet girl, but I'm still looking for my 'It Girl.'" He continues, "I don't want to say it's hard for me to date in the spotlight. It is what it is at the end of the day. You can embrace it, or you can try and hide it." So what exactly is Jason looking for in his future 'It Girl'? "Just keep it real. Don't lie. Don't just talk about yourself all day long," he advises. "A good girl, but bad behind the scenes." Not quite sure what it means to be "bad"? Don't worry, "I'll be your teacher, I'll show you the ropes," Jason says, borrowing a line from his 2009 hit 'In My Head.' And as for his ideal date with that ever-elusive 'It Girl'? "Breakfast on the beach and watching the sunrise ... with mimosas..."

At 9:35AM Jason arrives at NOW FM Radio's studios and the second latte has definitely kicked in as Jason starts bouncing off the radio station's walls and speaking in a British accent to get some giggles out of those around him. "I definitely want to do Braodway at some point. There are a couple of things I want to do before I do Broadway, but I specifically want to do 'Ragtime.' It's a really, really great show, an old show, but I would like to bring it back," the former musical theater student admits. "I'd play Coalhouse," naturally.

After signing some 'Future History' album posters to decorate the walls of NOW FM, it's off to the Warner Brother's New York office for a slew of afternoon interviews. At 1:00PM, Derulo sits down opposite a WPTY Radio contest winner, a lovely girl with a nervous smile, for a fan interview. (By the way, Jason is leaving it up to the fans to select his next 'Future History single. "Tweet at me!" he encourages.)

Before he had fans dying to meet with him, Jason spent years in the industry as a songwriter for other artists, and even tied with Lady Gaga (whom he opened for on her Monster Ball Tour) for the coveted Songwriter of the Year prize at BMI's Pop Music Awards earlier this year. "'Replay' by Iyaz -- that song was one of those songs that just really stuck in your head and was a huge, huge record all over the world. So, that's one of the songs I'm proud of," he responded when prompted to pick his favorite of the songs that he gave away before making it as a solo artist last year with his self-titled debut album. "Every song that I write goes on its own journey. So I never regret giving songs to another artist. It should be their song. I have a tattoo on my back that represents just that. It's a feather pen and it goes into birds and what it signifies is that every song that I write, after I've written it goes on its own journey and becomes its own monster," Derulo explains.

But what about the ones he got to keep for his own sophomore album, 'Future History'? "On the album there are a lot of emotional songs for me. They were all pretty emotional at the time. Heartaches, heart breaks, my cousin passing away. The stalker situation that I went through, they're all in these songs," Jason reveals of his true-to-life lyrics. "Songwriting and being in the studio is very therapeutic. It helps me to get past things. Sometimes I'll write a song that is the opposite of what I'm going through and it kind of helps the situation because I'm not dwelling in the moment."

"In the studio it just has to be a sexy vibe. When I walk in, there has to be candles everywhere. It just has to be really sex, 'cause that's how I like it. It just makes me comfortable. When the vibe is right, my mind is right and then most likely the song will be right." And how does Jason get his "vibe right" and his "mood right" when it comes to prepping for a live performance? "When you look good, you feel good," he explains. Jason goes on to describe a unique confidence boosting, backstage song-and-dance ritual that he and his dancers engage in before a performance. "Jeans lookin' good. Hair lookin' good," he chants while rhythmically clapping and stomping.

After taking us through the song-and-dance, Jason is ready for his surprise flash mob with the New York Knicks dancers outside of Madison Square Garden's FUSE studios. He arrives for a run-through at 3:45 to the delight of a dozen smiling and scantily clad dancers. Outside, a crowd of fans and onlookers begin to gather. From inside FUSE studio walls, Jason and the ladies run through the three-song set. The dancers leave for their dressing room while Jason stays on the empty rehearsal floor to stretch, practice some impressive handstand moves, and do some vocal warm-ups on his own.

This is how we imagine Jason might have been back in his high school days, especially after the self-proclaimed "loner" reveals, "I was always the person rehearsing. I would be in the studio for hours and hours on end, working on my dance steps, working on my songs, singing all the time. That's how I was. Whether it was theater, whether it was music, whether it was dancing, that's always what I was doing. It was just me working all the time. I always wanted to write songs. I always wanted to be creative and that takes a lot of time."

It seems all the hard work is paying off. At 4:20 Jason jumps out onto the New York City sidewalk and stages a flash mob performance with the Knicks dancers outside of FUSE. He is instantly mobbed by screaming fans, pushing their way through the crowds to get a glimpse at the pop star, and if they're lucky, a signed poster. Some hopefuls had to walk away empty handed, as Jason was whisked away to make it on time to his interview at MTV studios in Times Square.

At 5:30PM Jason arrives at MTV and by chance bumps into famed MTV personality Sway, who charismatically shakes Derulo's hand and congratulates him on the recent release of his new album. By 6:00PM the interview and day of non-stop promo wraps for the hard working multi-talent who clearly puts his heart and soul into doing what he loves, making sure he solidifies his place in, well, 'Future History.'
