"Excited for yall to see the Criminal video!" Brit tweeted hours beforehand, alerting fans that the controversial clip -- a modern-day 'Bonnie & Clyde' story filmed in London with boyfriend Jason Trawick -- was set to premiere.
As has been widely reported, the mini-movie features plenty of gunplay, but it starts out rather tame, with Britney looking foxy at a fancy cocktail party. Unfortunately, her date is a philandering, hot-tempered thug, and after Spears insults a woman he tries picking up, asking why she's not "working the street corner," the dude takes her outside and gives her a slap.
That's when Trawick comes to the rescue, giving the Brit's boorish beau a jolly-good whooping.
"Are you OK?" he asks, after delivering his beating.
"Wait," Spears says, kicking the fallen fellow in the groin. "Now I'm OK."
The two take off on a motorcycle, and it seems all is right with the world. But it turns out Brit's new guy is no saint, either. In fact, he's a wanted criminal, and while that might be a problem for ordinary girls, Spears finds herself seduced by the romance of crime. The two knock off a grocery store -- here we see the infamous sequence in which Brit brandishes a pistol -- and head back to his place for a post-robbery shower.
But the soapy water isn't enough to wash away the guilt, at least as far as the British police are concerned. They surround the pair's love nest and spray the place with bullets.
Miraculously, our heroes make it out alive, teaching us all a valuable lesson: If you're young and tattooed, crime does pay.
