Kelly Clarkson: Political Views Ignite Firestorm on Twitter

With the Republican Iowa caucuses just around the corner, many Americans have politics on the brain -- and that includes Kelly Clarkson. The 'Mr. Know It All' singer took to her Twitter last night (Dec. 28) to give dark horse candidate Ron Paul her endorsement. And then ... all hell broke lose!

It all started innocently enough, with Clarkson tweeting: "I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Virtually minutes later, Clarkson found herself on the receiving end of a political firestorm. Fan after fan who disagreed with Kelly began attacking her support of Paul, branding him a racist and homophobe. Instead of ignoring the prompts for political debate, KC began responding to her critics ... one tweet at a time.

"@msschantz we shouldn't try & help/tell other countries how to solve their issues w/the poor when we can't even solve our own," Clarkson responded to one person who disagreed with her candidate's foreign policy stance. "@deethers I have never heard that he's a racist? I definitely don't agree with racism, that's ignorant. @BarkingTurtles I love all people and could care less if you like men or women. I have never heard that Ron Paul is a racist or homophobe?" retorted Kel to claims that Paul was bigoted against certain groups.

Kelly also revealed, "I am a Republican but I actually voted Democrat last election."

After a night full of inflammatory comments, the original 'American Idol" couldn't take it anymore and ended her tweet debate with these frustrating words: "I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite."

What do you think of celebs like Kelly voicing their political beliefs on sites like Twitter? Who do you plan to vote for in the upcoming primary elections? Comment below with your thoughts.

considering the state of America all the current leadership might as well be considered ....phobes, race...., and all those other wrong 'words' .... seems like 'they' don't like America at all
.
wanting Americans to have freedom from the government is a very liberal outlook

I agree she has a right to voice her opinion. There's some points I agree on with Paul, but he's not my first choice. Actually I don't care for Romney either. There was something about Romney that I didn't care for and after listening to a small interview with Wolf from CNN last night, it came to me... he reminds me of Richard Nixon-maybe the slight resemblance made me think of him, but also, to me, Romney is slick when trying to avoid questions, like Nixon use to, he danced around the super pac question and his tax return, just as an example. They all seem to have good and bad points. I, like alot of other people, will probably change my mind again on my favorite before this is finished. I will be doing alot of watching and reading before my final jugement . I want the best to defeat Obama

Clarkson just indicated she supported Paul's less controversial views, not his racist attitude -- past or present. She, like most, found some part of the candidate's platform she agreed with, but ignored the parts she didn't recognize as potentially significant. She IS entitled to her opinion

Ron Paul is a good man for sure. But it is no wonder that the politicaly correct know nothings hate filled racist and homosexuals come out of the woodwork to slam him falsely. Shame on them.

I saw Ron Paul on The Tonight Show, and he stated that this government should be doing more for the poor in this country. I have always agreed with that. This government committed billions to Afganistan to "boost their economy, and also other countries, while this country is in debt trillions! He also said let the individual states and people have more say. I agree with Kelly, I have never heard of any actions that suggest he is a bigot. I may be wrong.
We need someone in office, that does believe that charity begins at home. But, that includes all politicians. No president can get the job done without the support of the other political figures.

I believe that just like every one of us, Ms.KC has a right to her opinion and the right to support who she feels is the right person. What gives anyone the right to attack her for her stance or her right to post just like anyone else. The biggest problem with this country is the media and the hatefulness that it spreads to ignorant people every where. I don't but to KC's music but I have heard it but her choice of who she supports doesn't effect that. As far as the election, this is one republican who will not vote for anty of these people. I would rather have the devil I know than thedemons I don't trust.
