At the New York premiere last night (Jan. 23) for her new movie 'W.E.,' Madonna stunned the audience with a rare display of emotion and vulnerability. The singer, who also co-wrote and directed the film, was in the midst of introducing the movie, when she became visibly choked up while thanking her deceased mother during the speech.

"[The film is] a story about love," Madonna told the crowd. "What we have to sacrifice for love ... what we're willing to do for love ... and the compromises we're willing to make for love. Having the courage to know when it's not love ... and when it's time to walk away."

"Finally," continued Madge. "I would like to thank my mother ... because really this story is, um, is the story of a female's ... the journey of a female soul." It was then Madonna paused, in a fit of overwhelming emotion, and tried to compose herself. Then, after a few deep breathes, the diva managed to say: "And my mother gave me life. So thank you."

The death of her mother at a young age is an issue that has haunted Madonna throughout her adult years. "Many people know her mother died when she was 5 years old," says J. Randy Taraborrelli, author of 'Madonna: An Intimate Biography.' "But what people don't know is how terrible that last year of Madonna's mother's life was for Madonna. She felt really frustrated by the powerlessness that went along with childhood."

Indeed, the complicated emotions stemming from her mother's passing saw both positive and negative effects in Madonna's life. "You walk around with a big hole inside you, a feeling of emptiness and longing," Madonna has said. "And I think a lot of times that's why you become an overachiever."

To say Madge became an overachiever is an understatement. Besides her new movie, Madonna will be singing at this year's Super Bowl as well as releasing a new CD, 'M.D.N.A.' in the spring.
