Madonna, Guy Ritchie Marriage: Singer Opens Up About Cause of Split

After British filmmaker Guy Ritchie likened his Madonna marriage to a "soap opera," the pop icon herself has opened up about her eight-year marriage to Ritchie in an interview with Newsweek.

Madonna, who's making the rounds to promote her new film 'W.E.,' tells the magazine that the movie's love story was actually influenced by her relationship with her ex-husband. In fact, it was the end of Madge's marriage that inspired her to begin writing the screenplay for 'W.E.' "I was certainly asking a kind of existential question that I think people ask when they've been married that long: What is the perfect love?" Madonna explained.

"Because when you start off, everything's great and lovely, and the person you've married is flawless, and you're flawless," continues the singer/director. "Then time goes by, and you share a life, you have children, and there are cracks in the veneer. It's not as romantic as it used to be."

"You think, 'This isn't what I thought it was going to be,' and, 'How much am I willing to sacrifice?'" Madonna admitted. Still, the entertainment industry veteran insists she still believes in marriage, and may well walk down the aisle for a third time. Madonna's first marriage to actor Sean Penn lasted from 1985 to 1989. She is currently dating the much younger French dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24.

"When you get to the end of the movie, I think it's very clear they really loved each other, and that I am a romantic and that I do believe in true love," Madge declared of the message of her film.

In keeping with the close-to-home theme of the making of 'W.E.,' Madonna has also revealed that she pushed her 15-year-old daughter Lourdes into appearing in the film as a younger version of the lead character -- only to cut her from the final edit! "There was a scene where she played Wally as a young girl. And I just kind of dragged her in at the last minute. It was quite unfair of me what I did and what I asked her to do," she told MTV. "But she was really great and then I ended up cutting her out of the film. Ruthless, I know. I said, 'Sorry babe, you're on the cutting room floor.' She took it like a champ."

What is wrong with people, don't they know love changes & matures. First it's the hot, sexy type of love, then it's the we have kids changing love, then it actually becomes the awsome comfortable with each other, not having to put on pretenses type of comfortable love. I've been married nearly 30 years. Did our love change, yes. Is my love still worth working for & having, Definately.

Another old "has been" trying to stay young beyond their years and dating a super young guy. Makes her look stupid, and yet she was amazingly talented at one time. Demi Moore and Madonna should get together.

She's jealous of plenty of people, I'm sure. Not that she or her hardcore fans will admit it.

So, her marriage moves on like everyone else's and she gets bored w/ him. And THAT is some sort of "existential question"??? All her movies STINK and whenever she opens her mouth to speak she makes an ass of herself. She needs to just stick to making albums.
