"Our family is grieving right now and it's a private matter. We are deeply saddened for the loss of our beloved sister, daughter, and granddaughter, Leslie Carter," the Carter family said in a statement. "We request the utmost privacy during this difficult time."
Leslie, who had been living in Canada with her husband Mike and daughter, Alyssa Jane, passed away in Buffalo, New York yesterday (Jan. 31) during a visit with her father. Currently the cause of death is unknown and according to HollywoodLife, the Erie County Coroner's Office reports that it will take four to six weeks until the toxicology report is complete -- after that, the family should have some answers as to Leslie's cause of death. In the meantime, the body has been released to the Carter clan so they can begin organizing the funeral.
Like her brothers Aaron and Nick, Leslie had tried her hand at a singing career and even recorded a single, 'Like Wow' that as featured on the 2001 soundtrack to 'Shrek.' She also joined her fellow siblings on the short-lived reality series, 'House of Carters.' However, life in the spotlight didn't seem to suit the aspiring singer the same way it did her famous brothers.
"I interviewed Leslie when she was attempting to launch her career as a solo artist," Kelly Bryant, former Entertainment Editor of Teen Magazine, tells AOL Music. "It was pretty clear that she didn't have the same interest in performing as Nick and Aaron and it was pretty painful to watch a young girl be pushed into a spotlight she didn't appear to want ... at least at the time."
Leslie's death seemingly came as a shock to her the rest of her family. Just yesterday, Aaron was tweeting up a storm about shopping for jeans in New York while his brother Nick jokingly tweeted gossip blogger Perez Hilton about getting a hair cut. As of today, their Twitter feeds have both remained silent.
However, Nick did release a statement via his publicist, detailing his plans to forge on with his tour despite the passing of his sibling. "Performing is cathartic to me and I am dedicating the rest of my tour to my sister since she loved to watch me perform," says Nick.
With the shocking death of their sister, hopefully Nick and Aaron will be able to rely on one another for support. During our conversation with Aaron last week, he admitted his older brother hadn't been very present in his life recently. "Nick is more focused on him right now," Aaron told us. "We're always really busy but we always find ways to reconnect. That's how our relationship is. We've always been workers and we always go out and do our thing"
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Carter family during this trying time.
