Jamie Lynn Spears Pregnancy: Britney's Sister Was Too Scared to Ask for Birth Control as a Teen

On June 19, 2008, Britney Spears' kid sister Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth to daughter Maddie Briann Aldridge at age 16. Before that, Jamie Lynn was a star in her own right, having appeared as a series regular on Nickelodeon's comedy sketch show 'All That,' before grabbing the starring role on the channel's hit show 'Zoey 101.' But when she announced she was expecting then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge baby, that all quickly came to an end. Now over three years later, Jamie Lynn has opened up about her accidental pregnancy and how it could have been prevented.

In an interview with Glamour Magazine, Jamie Lynn admitted it was her fear of judgment that stopped her from taking preventative measures against pregnancy as a teen. "I had been on a Nickelodeon show, 'Zoey 101,' and after we wrapped shooting, I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that," Jamie Lynn recalled. "Then I found out I was pregnant. I was 16. I'd had one boyfriend," Jamie explained, remembering the shock she felt when she learned the news.

Jamie insists she was unjustifiably ridiculed for her mistakes because she was a public figure, saying, "It doesn't make it perfect or all right. But I was judged for something that probably most everyone does ... I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name." Then the actress, who is currently pursuing a country music career in Nashville, Tenn. revealed, "I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls ... I was really scared to go to the doctor. And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn't want to ask my doctor."

The single mom is now 20 and insists she will teach her three-year-old daughter Maddie all about safe sex in order to help her make informed decisions about family planning. "It'd be dumb to sit here and say that Maddie isn't going to like a boy one day and she isn't going to have a boyfriend. I'll just have to handle that the best way that I can," Jamie said.

"Both her daddy and me will caution her, and I would hope that she would not want to do that at all, but I have to make sure that I'm realistic too. I've got to figure out a way to communicate to her to make smart choices and make the best decisions she can."

I am sure the peer pressure is hard...that is why I am trying to raise my children to be individuals. My 15 yo daughter has a "boyfriend" for about 9 months...the like each other they have kissed 2x..they go to different schools and see each other about 1x a month and it has always been for a family activity. My daughter isn't interested in a "real" relationship because she wants to go to college to become a LCSW and wants to get really good grades. SHe once told me "if you are always trying to be like somebody else you are never truely yourself"

My boys are younger so we will so how that goes

Why didn't you keep your legs closed like a good young woman should do. You shouldn't have even been thinking about sex! My god. Your generation has the morals of alley cats!

Thank goodness your not a tad bit judgmental! Get off your frickin' high horse! I have a teen daughter, raised to try to do the right thing. The reality is, peer pressure is a whole lot greater than anything a parent can say, preach and teach. Only a fool would think otherwise! We try to guide them down the right path, after that, all we can do is pray they go down it. If my child was in Jamie Lynn's shoes, I would be thankful that she made the choice to keep it. Think about it, I applaud her for keeping and raising the child!

She was too scared to ask for birth control, but not too scared to have sex! I get so tired of these famous tramps making idiotic statements as an excuse for getting pregnant. When I was 16, I knew I couldn't support myself, let alone a child and its mother. I had girls try to pressure me into having sex with them, but I knew what the consequences could be. I had a miserable childhood with a drunken abusive father who spent his paycheck at the bar buying drinks for himself and his friends and forgetting to buy food and pay the rent. Jamie Lynn had lots of money, but she still acted like her family was living in a 29 year old single wide mobile home. They girls I spent my time with knew how to say NO! They had ambition like me to better themselves. Jamie Lynn did something stupid and is now trying to get back on the money train. Why isn't she married to her baby's father. Is she too scared to ask about a marriage license? She and her boyfriend engaged in risky behaviour and now they don't want to own up to the consequences. In this case she and her boyfriend to some chances in the back seat of a car and got a baby as their prize. Jamie Lynn is as stupid as her sister Brittany and they both are as stupid as Bristol Palin! Keep your legs together until you want to have a baby!
