Leslie Carter Cause of Death: Singer Battled Depression, Addiction (REPORT)

Aaron and Nick Carter are still reeling from the loss today of their sister, aspiring singer Leslie Carter, who passed away Tuesday (Jan. 31) in Buffalo, New York. As AOL Music reported yesterday, it will take four to six weeks for a toxicology report to give the official cause of death. However, in a report released today (Feb. 2), police are saying the 25-year-old suffered an apparent overdose, potentially from medication she'd been taken for depression.

According to both PEOPLE Magazine and HollywoodLife, Leslie had been battling depression for quite some time. In a statement to the Chautauqua County sheriff, Ginger Carter, Leslie's half sister, revealed that the deceased had "a long history of mental illness" and seemed despondent the morning that she passed.

Leslie, who was found unresponsive in the upstate New York city after falling down in the shower, had medication to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety, as well as a muscle relaxant near her body. "She was battling a major addiction and yes, it was a surprise when she suddenly died," a source tells HollywoodLife. "But before anyone even said what caused it, everyone thought the same thing. She battled a prescription drug addiction for a while. Some think that she was even battling postpartum depression, too."

Another source tells the gossip web page that the pressure to make it in the music industry not only drove Leslie to depression, but also fractured the once-close Carter family. "Everyone in that family is trying to make it in Hollywood and it caused jealousy and pitted some of them against each other," a source says. "When Leslie got married, several members of her family didn't even attend. Close friends definitely find it strange that Nick isn't taking time off to go be with his family and he's instead performing in NYC - even though he did dedicate his tour to her. Many think the way the family is handling it is very bizarre."

Both Aaron Carter and Nick Carter have released statements thanking fans for their support. We'll keep you updated as this story develops.

Some forms of mental illness can be difficult to diagnose, but still it seems odd that she would have been prescribed so many medications at one time. Medications used to treat depression and other more severe forms of mental illness must be prescribed and monitored very carefully . Usually,it is required that the patient attend therapy/counsel sessions as well. Was there no one in her family willing to help this young lady with the administration of medications? No one that questioned how many medications she supposedly had been prescribed? If she was battling an addiction to prescription meds, why were so many medications left in her possession? The points presented as fact in this article are not clear and seem to have been made by someone who is uneducated about mental illness or Leslie's doctors were "quacks"(and her husband/ family too self-consumed to care about her well-being). I'm not looking to blame anyone in their time of grief, but this article seems to blame Leslie for an illness for which she did not ask. Though her untimely death may not have been preventable, I find it hard to believe that no one close to her predicted that an accidental overdose was a possibility. Makes a sad story even sadder.

Aaron looks pretty skinny, He's not too far behind, He has that Crystal Meth or Cocaine look for sure, His face is long & scarry, He used to be 50 -75 lbs heavier, Now he's looking very unheathly. With great wealth comes responsibility, Once the drugs get ahold of you, They will bring you closer & closer to death.

Better for her had she never been subjected to the addictions that too often come with an entertainment career. Many aspire; few achieve; some go down in flames.

I guess they unconventionally call that kind of death due to a girl who hasn't had enough sex and then has a baby. Tight gets too tight when it snaps back, what a waste. Really,...

It is very sad she passed away, and it likely could have been prevented if only her family wasn't too "busy" trying to become Superstars after their flames burnt out.....Anyone who has depression and is on a cocktail of meds, needs to have themselves and their meds monitored 24/7....It only takes one time to take 1 too many and thats it. If your Dr says take 2 every 4 hours ...thats what it means, not 3 or 4....If it says2 every 4 hours thats what it means....
Also, don't be so busy trying to get to the top, that you step over your dead brother or sister on the way there!!!!

That's really sad. I was a huge fan of House of Carters and she was my favorite. She just seemed way more down to earth than the rest of the family, and less crazy as well. RIP Leslie

I know.... It is very sad... I remember "House of Carters." I was so excited to see it and then when I did finally see it, I was slightly disappointed in everyone's behavior... Especially Aaron's because I was a huge fan. =/ She did seem more down to earth.... It wouldn't surprise me that it was intentional suicide... I mean, look at the way they treated her on the show. Especially Angel and BJ with their "PRANKS" of sticking DOG POOP behind her bed and also making her think her car was leaking. =/ Honestly back then I thought it was just MEAN not funny. Poor girl....
RIP LESLIE

I am baffled by some of the insensitive and incredibly DISRESPECTFUL remarks about this beautiful girl. Who are any of us to judge? Depression and anxiety are diseases just like any other. Seeing as though she suffered tremdeously, perhaps now she is at peace. Anyone here over the age of 18 should be mature enough to show a little respect when someone passes..no matter what your thoughts are. RIP and condolences..

It is just very sad. I feel for her family.

Yet, it is strange that the family is fighting to 'make it' in Hollywood. In the end, its just a job. Does a job mean more to you than your own family? In this case, obviously so.

WOW! People are so cruel. I did not know her or had even heard of her before but it seems like such a tragedy when someone this young and beautiful has to die like this. By the way I don't live under a rock. I got rid of my cable TV years ago and do not listen to the radio so most of the so called stars that people rant about about I have never heard of couldn't be happier but what a waste of a precious young girl's life. To those people who are so cruel and callous, if it was your own sister who died I don't think you would want people to be so cold and mean about it. Where is your sense of humanity or do you even have one?
