"Valentine's Day seemed like the perfect time to debut my new song 'Menage a Trois,' which is about a love triangle and what happens when you unexpectedly fall in love with two different women at the same time," Brown tells AOL Music. "It's a situation I strongly recommend avoiding if you can help it," he shares with a laugh. We're with you there, Austin!
"Musically, the song was influenced by classic Motown and Stax records. We wanted to create a song that channeled the Temptations and the Four Tops with James Jamerson on the bass," Austin revealed. "I wrote and produced the song with my writing partners Scott Bruzenak and Tommy Parker. The three of us refer to ourselves as the Backpack Kids. We all come from different backgrounds and styles," the young singer explained of his collaborators.
"Scott's a musical chameleon whose musicality ranges from electronic music to classical to free jazz. Tommy is an encyclopedia of music and soul, and I was lucky enough to be born into a family that lives and breathes music," Austin said, referencing the Jackson's musical legacy.
"I've got a deep love of pop music," Brown continues. "And there's nothing like the feeling of having that music love you back. We put all these styles into our backpack to create the sound."
"'Menage a Trois' is my first new song of 2012 and I'm really excited to share it with AOL Music fans first," the singer shares with us. "If you dig it, please check out austinbrown.com -- there's gonna be a lot more coming over the course of the next few weeks!"
A clip of Austin's 'Menage a Trois' music video will premiere tonight on Entertainment Tonight. Tune in at 7:30PM EST to get a first glimpse!
