From forgetting the lyrics to pitchy vocal performances, the National Anthem is a virtual death trap for singers. We all remember Christina Aguilera's infamous butchering of the song at last year's Super Bowl ... and so did Kelly.
So maybe it was a smart move on Clarkson's part when she begged her manager to find a teleprompter to feed her the lyrics to the song while she performed in front of 111 million viewers.
"I tried to cheat. I told my manager, 'People are killing her [Aguilera]!" the 'American Idol' revealed during a radio interview on 'The Bert Show.' "Just have them up somewhere on video, we'll make it look like it's for the crowd!'" she demanded. "I felt so sorry for her -- they killed her. Honestly, we're human and how often do you sing that song? Never!" Kelly said coming to Aguilera's defense.
However, Kelly's plan to avoid Christina's fate nearly backfired when the teleprompter malfunctioned! "They didn't do it right ... I'd sing the line and it would come up with a delay. I was like, 'Now it's messing me up!'" she recalled. "So then I shut my eyes. You'd have thought the lyrics were on my eyelids, I had my eyes shut the whole time!" she joked. We knew you had it in you, Kelly!
