For as long as musicians have been making records, they've also been releasing them under carefully, and sometimes bizarrely, crafted personas. From Hank Williams' religious Luke the Drifter to David Bowie's iconic Ziggy Stardust to Garth Brooks' somewhat ill-advised Chris Gaines experiment, musicians have long used alter egos to explore another side of their personalities and their art.

Lately, though, it seems like some alter egos have not been content to remain so alter. They've been getting their own shows, their own Twitter accounts and even hosting awards shows all by themselves.

In honor of these personas -- and what appears to be their impending world domination -- here's a list of our favorite pop alter egos.
