Lady Gaga: Boyfriend Troubles Led Star to Dress Up as a Man for Two Weeks

Lady Gaga made headlines when she showed up to the 2011 MTV VMAs dressed as her male alter ego Jo Calderone -- but according to the singer, it wasn't her first attempt at cross-dressing. During what Gaga proclaimed to be her last interview for a "very long time," the pop star told TV mogul Oprah Winfrey she dressed as a dude for an extended period of time in a bid to better understand men.

After a series of dating disasters and failed relationships, Gaga decided to spend two weeks in 2011 disguised as a male. "I taped down my breasts. I went through a severe psychological change," she admitted during an interview on 'Oprah's Next Chapter.' "I really wanted to delve into the mind of what I believe to have been my vice in men," the shape-shifting performer explained.

Gaga's little experiment sought to answer burning questions like, "Why am I dating the same guy over and over again?" As Gaga put it, "It was about explaining that the woman you see on stage is the same woman that's in bed. I have struggled with that for a long time with dating. They want to know the real me. I'm sitting right here."

The singer explained how her time in drag evolved into the creation of her male alter ego, Jo. "When the spotlight's not on me, I sometimes don't know who I am because I feel alive on the stage. And that's what Jo really was all about. If I had to do a performance art piece, confess who I truly am, that is my way."
