Whitney Houston Funeral Cost: Newark Mayor Cory Booker Addresses City's Big Bill

Whitney HoustonPatrick Demarchelier

As AOL Music previously reported, Whitney Houston's funeral cost New Jersey $187,000. With taxpayers angry over the high dollar amount, the mayor of Newark, Cory Booker, has issued a statement.

"As with any major event, and Ms. Houston's funeral was an international event, our police department's priority is to keep both citizens and visitors alike safe when they come to our city."

According to CBS New York, the large cost of the funeral was due to Newark police overtime. However, the cash-strapped city's major funding of Houston's funeral service has outraged residents who claim there are better things to pay top dollar for -- including crime reduction and homeless assistance.

Despite the funeral taking a 5 percent bite out the city's police budget, Newark Councilwoman Mildred Crump claimed "If they [the police] had not been there, someone may have been trampled, seriously hurt."

Well I look at it this way. If the City provides support for a person that dies, they need to provide support free of charge for anyone that dies regardless if your a drug addict or a plain old normal hard working person that was not addicted to drugs.

Her estate should pay the money back to the City of Newark. Mr. Booker has been doing a great job as Mayor.

The solution to avoid this in the future is simple. Newark should pay their cops less money. Outrageous wages to
members of a mostly corrupt police force is not an answer to anything. Newark already has one of the highest crime rates in the US. Base the salaries of the cops on their performance. Not on union demands.

Her estate need to pay the city back for the money the city spent to guard this Funeral. No other citizen would be treated to such an expensive event in any city.

Take the money out of her estate unless she used it all for drugs. 187000 funeral for a junkie.

Cory Brooker is a smart man trying to revive the armpit of America. He's absolutely correct about the police force and spending the money he spent on security. Besides, it's likely to be the last major event in Newark for the next 10 years

I don't think that it is right for anyone's funeral to cost the public that kind of money. If security was an issue then the family should have made plans for that. The estate should pay for the city's costs, not the tax payers.

This only adds one more item of shame on a talented but misguided woman. I hope the family steps up and does the right thing and let her rest in peace.
