Gino DePinto, AOL
During a break from their recent AOL Sessions, I had one of those types of chats with the British breakout band. On a set filled with cameramen, photographers and sound techs all listening on, the guys held nothing back -- discussing everything from the fan who seriously freaked them out to mistaking David Beckham for a wax figure. Check out our entire convo below.
I'm always so surprised when I hear people refer to you as a boy band because I feel like your sound is a bit more mature than that.
Jay: I think we were initially branded as a boy band because that is indeed what we technically are. And I think the view changed slightly because people realized as much as a lot of young girls like our songs, we're not just tailoring it to those people. We want to ... we make songs that I think if it wasn't 5 guys singing it ... if it was one guy singing it, then everyone would buy it. And so somehow we always have that stigma, but we don't care about those people -- we care about the people that buy our albums and songs and we are very happy with the songs we do I think.
So your fans ... it might be an understatement to say that they're crazy for you guys. What is the wildest thing a fan has done to get close to you?
Siva: Yeah, so we recently ... we moved out to different apartments and we had a moving vans going all over London. And in my moving van there was an unknown box and in that box was a fan and the fan was in there for about 3 hours. And so I got out and saw this random box and I opened it up and the box is lined with plastic and there was a girl ... red faced girl sweating! She stank. But anyway...
Jay: Don't mate, id she sees this, she'll be gutted.
Siva: I know but I'm just trying to be real. You have to be real. She was sweating. She was in there for 3 hours. She wasn't supposed to smell like roses, was she? So I got her out of the box and she asked for a picture. So I gave her a picture and then I sent her on her way.
Jay: Rewarding.
Siva: She deserved a picture I think.

I know you've done a million interviews and in probably 99% of those interviews, you get asked about the One Direction comparison. What I want to know is, which one of their songs do you guys wish that you had recorded?
Jay: This is new; I like this.
Max: That's something we have not thought about ...
Jay: Ok, the one that I like most is "It's Gotta Be You" because I just think those harmonies they do in the back, it's just uplifting. It's cool.
Would you ever want to do a mega-collaboration with them?
Max: It would be hard to do a collab with them because it's sort of mixing two genre's ... you're in the same genre, but the music's so different. I don't know where we'd draw the line as to say ... you know where we're allowed to make sexual innuendos where I'm guessing they wouldn't. But we like to do that sort of thing, so we'd have to make a compromise which would fit...which would fit both sets of bands I think.
Siva: There would be ten people singing on our song which is just a crowd, that's like a crowd. No one wants to listen to a crowd sing. No one!
The tabloids, especially ones back home in England, print lots of stuff about you guys. What's one of the craziest things you've read about yourself?
Tom: I think we've got it quite easy in the press. Some of us have. Those four have.
Max: I get linked with a lot of girls that I've never met before.
Jay: I once was meant to have slagged off [be mean to] Cheryl Cole. It was a famous lady in the X Factor, but I don't think I'd ever even spoken to her at that point, but...
Siva: You married something.
Jay: In Wikipedia I married an avocado. It's just ... that's generally the world that we live in where that can be printed. But yeah. You know what? You are right though, the American Press and even the paps are much friendlier. I mean as much as they do twist it a bit to get the gossip, I think so far, we've not felt that anything's just been drawn from thin air. But in the UK, literally recently, you go, "Come on. Come on."
Nathan: A source told me. What source? Your best mate!
Max: You're ass.
You've probably met a ton of other musicians at this point, but what's been your most surprising celebrity encounter?
Siva: J.Lo is the most surprising celebrity encounter ever. She is a goddess. She's lovely.
Max: Surprisingly David Beckham came to one of our rehearsals. That was cool. We were rehearsing and David Beckham just walked in with his kids. Because we'd met his kids before, like because they like our music and stuff, but he just turned up out of the blue one day with him and it was like, "That's David Beckham."
Nathan: Such a nice guy as well.
Tom: He was my hero when I was a kid.
Max: I thought it was his waxwork at first.
He is very quaffed, yes.
Jay: What a word
Max: What a great word.
Jay: We're going to start using that!
