MMVA 2012: Carly Rae Jepsen, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber Are Big Winners at Music Video Award Show

There was no maybe about it tonight: the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards belonged to Carly Rae Jepsen. The Mission, BC singer conquered the stage, the podium and even the red carpet at the awards show, turning in two showstopping performances, winning three MMVAs, and even earning best-dressed honours for her stylish black dress with a pair of slits to make Angelina Jolie's infamous Oscar leg look unassuming.

Hot on the heels of an over-the-top, prop-laden and clothes-shedding opening number by awards co-hosts LMFAO, Jepsen took over the stage, singing her world dominating hit single "Call Me Maybe" while swinging from a giant telephone receiver (the display was enough to distract the notoriously self-involved gossip blogger Perez Hilton from his time in the press room. "This song is like my first cheat after three months of really healthy eating and I just go on a binge and I can't stop eating!" he cooed.) She returned later in the broadcast to join rapper Flo Rida and sing the chorus for his latest single, "Wild Ones." And when she wasn't busy performing, Carly was busy accepting awards. "Call Me Maybe" earned MuchMusic.com's Most Watched Video Award, Video of the Year, and UR FAVE Video of the Year.

Getting a little teary backstage at the end of the night, Jepsen recounted some of the struggles she faced during the early days of what's evolved into a true Cinderella story.

"I'd always hoped that I could spread the music worldwide, and I think that I realized, every step of the way, just how difficult it was," she told the press. "It didn't stop me from trying, though. I did everything. I was bartending while I was fronting a swing band, and I was doing everything I could and I didn't really know how."

But everything changed when Justin Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun first caught the "Call Me Maybe" bug and took her under their wings.

"Justin's and Scooter's and everyone's support has just been life-changing. It's been like a dream come true for me," she said.

Bieber didn't go home empty-handed, either. The Stratford, ON heartthrob, who took his baby brother for a stroll down the red carpet before the show, was awarded the cumbersomely-titled International Video of the Year by a Canadian for "Boyfriend," and was voted UR Fave Artist by MuchMusic fans. Surrounded by dancers in stylish space suits, the Biebs closed the show with a Michael Jackson-esque performance of "Boyfriend."

The Jepsen-related good will didn't stop there. The pop star's friend -- and "Call Me Maybe" co-writer -- Josh Ramsay's band, Marianas Trench, also picked up a pair of trophies for Cinematography of the Year for "Fallout," and Pop Video of the Year for "Haven't Had Enough." The band, who arrived on the red carpet in a bouncy castle, celebrated their victory by performing with a full choir.

In other MMVA shenanigans, Katy Perry was voted UR Fave International Artist and stripped down to a fleshtone body suit in a butterfly-themed take on her new single, "Wide Awake," Far East Movement showed up in a backbreaking amount of old school bling, and Canadian R&B star Kreesha Turner walked the red carpet with a studded corset -- and a gaggle of hooded men -- from Toronto fetish shop Northbound Leather. "I was like 'let's find something I love!' And it's the MMVAs. You're allowed to be a little extra over the top," she told AOL Music about her getup on the red carpet.

Co-hosts LMFAO certainly agreed with Turner's over the top MMVA vision, treating viewers to partial nudity, inflatable animals, shamelessly cheesy jokes and an impressive bout of shuffling with Modern Family star Rico "Manny" Rodriguez.

Backstage, the duo admitted that not all of their brilliant hosting ideas made it to air.

"Oh man, the naked skit with Selena Gomez!" recalled Red Foo.

"They struck that as soon as we presented it," SkyBlu explained. "We said 'No! There will be distance and it's cool!' But you can't do that."

"Oh, and then we were supposed to tear off Katy Perry's blouse," Red Foo continued.

"We might still do that," added SkyBlu.

Even with a slightly tempered vision, LMFAO impressed the critics with their co-hosting duties. Or, at the very least, they impressed themselves. When asked to assess their award show abilities, the pair gave themselves a rave review.

"That was the first time [that we've hosted an awards show], but it looked like we've been doing it every night," Red Foo surmised.

SkyBlu concurred: "Nat-ur-al!"
