Madonna, Russian Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Warns 'Threat of Physical Violence' at Upcoming Concerts

Days after Madonna spoke out in support of the three jailed members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, a security alert has been announced for the pop star's upcoming concert tonight in Moscow and Thursday in St. Petersburg as part of her world MDNA tour.

Madonna took a strong stance against censorship in media statements she made in advance of her Russian shows. "I'm against censorship, and my whole career I've always promoted freedom of expression, freedom of speech," she said. "So obviously, I think what's happening to them [Pussy Riot] is unfair. And I hope that they do not have to serve seven years in jail, that would be a tragedy."

"I think art should be political," she added. "I think art through history, historically speaking, art always reflects what's going on socially. So for me it's hard to separate the idea of being an artist and being political."

In the wake of Madonna's statement, the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a joint "Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Madonna Concerts." The statement reads as follows:

"This is to alert U.S. citizens in Russia who are planning to attend the Madonna concerts in Moscow on Tuesday, August 7, or in St. Petersburg on Thursday, August 9, that the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg has received information regarding a threat of physical violence against spectators and performers at the St. Petersburg concert on August 9."

U.S. officials "have shared the information with appropriate Russian law enforcement authorities."

The statement also added that Russian authorities "are taking appropriate measures in light of this information" and "expect that enhanced security measures will be put in place" for both concerts."

Pussy Riot are currently in jail facing charges of hooliganism based on them performing an anti-Vladmir Putin song in a Russian church. The trial of the three musicians in Pussy Riot -- Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich -- continues with speculation that a possible verdict could come down by week's end.

As reported earlier on Spinner, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Franz Ferdinand, Kate Nash and others have voiced support for the band. Additionally, yesterday Peaches announced she would write a "Free Pussy Riot" song today while requesting fans send in videos or attend a gathering in Berlin later this week to create a video for the song.

There is no freedom of speech or expression in the dictatorship of Russia. However, the Russian people have had a taste of freedom and it is going to be very difficult to put the Genie back in the bottle.

Putin is an evil dictator and bullies everyone who dares to criticize him. He needs to be stopped!

Freedom of speech is not the case in Russia.

I would like to add that I am not in support of the way in which the band voiced it's opinion. In the USA there would be consequences. Maybe disturbing the peace, maybe criminal tresspass. The question here is the severity of the punishment. I would vote for time served (which is now 5 months in jail), community service, and probation. Three years is too harsh for singing a political song in a church.

Who knows, if we are lucky Madonna will get a taste of Russian justice, that is if she dares to do the tour there. After experiencing the Russians, perhaps she will appreciate what we have in America a little more.

And the warning came directly from Putin's office. Reminds me of Chicago Insurance.

Wow, the comments here are pretty harsh. Whether you like Madonna or not, she is using her voice to speak out against injustice. You don't have to like her, but her message is OUR OWN, Liberty and Free Speech. She is speaking as an American. Slamming her for speaking about our values is really unfortunate. Personally I think Russia would like to be a more open society, but based on the past, feels it is still a threat. They just need to take more steps to see that the benefits of a free society outweigh the benefits of ruthless control. I hope they will get there before more of their citizens suffer with fear and isolation.

Madonna should sit quietly in a rocking chair on her front porch where she belongs sipping milk. She has nothing to offer the world anymore, & the world owes her nothing in return.

Im sorry to say but im sure that ***** riot though they could criticize putin all they want, need to learn to do these things in a respectful way.. though I want to admit that I have not heard the song yet, still I am sure that it might have been over the top with disrespectful words and tone. It behooves us to remember that presidents are people also, and that we need to speak to them accordingly.. something that punk rockers have never been known for..I hope no one's feelings are hurt by my opinion but I seriously do not believe that this is a question of freedom..No one should be free to be insulting and degrading toward others, and this is especially true for a person who's primary mission is to maintain a high level of trust and respect from his people..without which leading and serving becomes extremely difficult if not impossible..

Rev, don't be naive enough to confuse freedom in Amerrica with that of Russia. In actuality, the State rules with an iron fist in Russia and there is minimal freedom. Regretfully, the way America is headed on our present course of Socialist orientation, those freedoms you take for granted may one day be a thing of the past.
