Lady Gaga, PETA Controversy: Singer Responds to 'Furgate'

Earlier this week, PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews penned an open letter to Lady Gaga, calling her out for her "turncoat" ways after the singer was spotted wearing fur on multiple occasions -- despite previous claims that she hates fur and doesn't wear it. Mother Monster has since received a whole lot of backlash for her furry fashions, and her flippant tweet which instructed those inquiring about the authenticity of her coats to be sure to "credit the designer HERMES. Thank You!"

Gaga has since changed her tune and issued a more formal response in a Littlemonsters.com post addressed to her fans and entitled, "FURGATE PART 1." "I want you to know that I care deeply about your feelings and views, and I will always support your philosophies about life," she claims. "We've been having over-arching conversations about society, equality, and politics for the past five years, and we should continue. I do not however support violent, abusive, and childish campaigns for ANY CAUSE. Particularly one that I respect. 'Animal Rights,'" the pop star insisted, despite her penchant for animal pelts.

"I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it hypercritical [sic] not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, 'kermit' and not to mention meat, that I have already worn," she said, referencing her infamous meat dress of 2010 (see the photo gallery below).

"This should already put me in a category as one who appreciates and adores the beauty of animals in fashion, but am not a strict vegan," the fashionista said in her defense before citing her artistic taste as an excuse for her actions. "I have truly always stayed away from skinned fur, especially i have never been able to afford a nice one, but this does not mean my morals are rigid and that I won't bend at the sight of an absolute art piece of a coat. I have no chains about this. You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance."

"But I am truly sorry to fans who are upset by this, its [sic] a fair and applaudable [sic] feeling about the health and safety of animals. I respect your views, please respect mine," the pop star asked. "And to campaigners, Save your flour to make bread for the children who are hungry," she added in an apparent swipe at PETA and other animal-rights activists.

"And Kim Kardashian is fabulous," she added in response to Mathews' accusation, "by wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you're making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian."

When AOL Music spoke with the PETA Senior VP earlier this week, he insisted that Gaga's fur flip-flop was more than just an affront to animal rights and questioned Gaga's commitment to her anti-bullying and gay-rights advocacy. "You start to wonder whether she really is against violence," Mathews says of the Born This Way Foundation creator. "She's supporting one of the most violent industries on the planet when she wears fur."

"FURGATE PART 2" merely corrects a spelling error in the original post, in case you were wondering.
