Adam Lambert, Marriage Equality Fundraiser: Singer Talks 'Shame and Guilt' of LGBT Community

Adam Lambert makes a point of staying away from politics when it comes to his publicly issued statements, but one hot-button topic the singer refuses to keep quiet about is marriage equality. The openly gay pop star is scheduled to perform at the Marylanders for Marriage Equality fundraiser at Washington DC's 9:30 Club tonight (Sept. 25), in support of the legalization of same-sex marriage in the state. The proposition will appear on the election day ballot this November, and Lambert tells the Washingtonian why he's eagerly lending his talents the cause.

"What's exciting about this concert is that it's a benefit for something I think is really important," The "American Idol" finalist-turned-chart-topper says. "I usually keep a distance from politics -- not because I don't have my own opinions, but because politics in this country involves a lot of mudslinging and negativity."

"Marriage equality, though, is a human-rights issue," he says in contrast. "It's nonpartisan, and I think it should bring people together, which is what I'm all about."

When asked for his opinion on why there is so much opposition to same-sex marriage in the country, Lambert says, "I think there's a lot of fear among people who oppose gay and lesbian marriage. I personally believe you're born one way or the other. Some people think it's a choice. I think the only choice involved is whether you're going to be honest about who you are or not, and I'm really big on honesty."

Adam continues, "If this is something we can get passed, what we're doing for the next generation is lifting a ton of shame and guilt and secrecy off of the LGBT community. The clichés attached to the gay community were born out of shame and secrecy, and if we can get rid of those things, we'll end up with a lot more happy, normalized gay and lesbian kids."

Glambert has certainly come a long way since shying away from his unsolicited title as a gay role model. These days, it seems like he's more than up for the challenge.

While there's the misrepresentation of the quotes, there's also just general grammatical errors. "Lambert tells the Washingtonian why he's eagerly lending his talents the cause" what? 'talents the cause' this not OK in journalism.

I certainly won't re-post this article, because of how you chose to "report" it - misquoting - how could you think this was the right thing to do, especially on this touchy subject? Adam has had to deal with a lot of crap from all sides, and this sort of thing only encourages it. He is a brave man, going where no one has gone before - do you think it was easy for him, being on Idol, dealing with all the critics, not only with his talent (which is beyond exceptional), but the whole "is he gay or not" which shouldn't have been an issue - and then everything he had to deal with that year, then the AMA's & being thrust into stardom where he's just trying to become an artist & then had everyone & their brother saying he needs to speak out for gay rights - he was the first to be signed as an openly gay artist on a record label in the US, the first out artist to be #1 on Billboard... many firsts, many accomplishments ... many criticisms - and yet he's remained a respectable, classy, articulate, intelligent man through it all. He's always stayed true to himself. He's been a bright source of positivity & light & I respect him immensely. He's opened my mind & heart to accept others & myself for who we all are, as individuals.
