Lady Gaga was recently awarded the LennonOno Grant for Peace, an honor she shared with several others, including Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot and the late writer Christopher Hitchens.

After she received the honor from Yoko Ono in Reykjavik yesterday, on the birthday of Yoko's late husband former Beatle John Lennon (Oct. 9), Gaga announced she will be giving the donation that accompanies the prize to Elton John's AIDS foundation.

Gaga accepted the award graciously, saying she will continue to "Communicate compassionately to the world and its leaders." The singer added, "I dare you to be compassionate in a cynical age." She dedicated the award to "Youth empowerment around the world."

The peace prize is a biennnial award established in honor of Yoko's late husband John Lennon. Yoko sought to honor Gaga for her work campaigning for the equality of gay, lesbian and transgender individuals. Ono told Reuters Television why she respects the singer so much.

"Lady Gaga is in a position of number one as a singer songwriter. And when you are number one you don't want to risk yourself. And she did," Ono said.
