"This made me cry," Madonna said in a "serious chat" with concertgoers, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "The 14-year-old schoolgirl who wrote a blog about going to school. The Taliban stopped her bus and shot her. Do you realize how sick that is?"
Malala was shot in the head and neck by a Taliban gunman who targeted her on a school bus, as she was on her way home from school. At just 11-years-old, Malala began publishing a diary for the BBC about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley, writing about the regime's shutdown of girls' schools and ban on girls' education. She remains in critical condition, according to the BBC.
"Support education! Support women!" Madonna shouted to the crowd. She later performed her usual onstage striptease to reveal "Malala" stenciled in bold, black letters across her back. "This song is for you, Malala," Madonna said as she launched into a live rendition of "Human Nature."
