Cher, Chaz Bono Sex Change: Icon Struggles With Child's Gender Reassignment

Cher was Chaz Bono's biggest cheerleader as he faced backlash when he became the first transgender contestant on "Dancing With the Stars" last year (2011). However, it seems the music legend's support for her child's choice to undergo female-to-male gender reassignment has not come without a struggle.

Chaz, 43, was born Chastity Bono to Cher and former-husband Sonny Bono. He began his gender transition in 2008 and legally changed his name and gender in 2010. ''It's been hard for mom," Chaz tells The Sunday Times. "But her loss isn't based on who I was before I transitioned, as I was in no way, shape or form typically female."

''For her, it's more the loss of a fantasy that probably began even before I was [born] ... of her thinking about the kind of daughter she thought she'd have," Chaz speculated about his famous mother's difficulty dealing with his transition.

Despite her shows of public support for her now-son, Cher may not be as comfortable with the situation as she outwardly seems.

''Mom loves girlie stuff, so it was difficult because I was never that person," he said. "I could never give her that experience. I sense she's still not 100 percent comfortable with what I've done."

"She's also bad with pronouns and remembering to call me Chaz," he reveals.

I claim happiness

We as parents do have dreams for our children before they are born. We in no way want our children to make life any more difficult for themselves than need be. I am sure that if Cher is a 'girlie-girl', it has been difficult for her, but she appears to have shown her love and support by coming to support her child, regardless of gender. Children, remember that even though we are your parents, we are imperfect and are simply doing the best that we can. We aren't perfect and you little critters don't come with manuals. Love us inspite of our imperfections. Chaz I have no doubt that your mom crazy loves you. Accept what she has to give -- it's hard for us to lose our dreams for our children, but it does not mean that we can not love and support you in your dreams. We do and Iam sure that your Mom does also Chaz. Embrace what she has to give.

What person would be comfortable with their child changing genders. Cher forgets to call her Chaz...too bad. You are and always will be her little girl. Maybe Chaz needs to make her next TV conquest "The Biggest Loser."
