Selena Gomez: Glamour's Woman of the Year 'Terrified' by Who She Could Have Become

After being named Glamour magazine's Woman of the Year, Selena Gomez opened up to the publication about just how surprised she is by the woman she has become. The singer/actress admits she's "terrified" to think of how her life might have turned out had she never left her home state of Texas to find fame and fortune.

"I definitely didn't appreciate [my upbringing] when I was little," the 20-year-old entertainer tells the magazine. "I was frustrated that my parents weren't together and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me."

Selena, who was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, was raised by her mother after her parents divorced when she was just 5 years old. She has previously opened up about her struggles growing up poor. "I'm terrified of what I would have become if I'd stayed there," Selena reveals. "I'm sure I'd have two children by now."

Gomez, who Glamour has dubbed "The Independent Spirit," clarifies her sentiment for her home state. "I love the people, and I'm glad I grew up there," she insists. "It's because of [my mom] that I can do things on my own. I like being professional. I like showing up on time. I like being good to people, and I know that I'm reflecting her at the end of the day."
