Kylie Minogue 'Flower' Inspiration: New Single Penned During Pop Star's Cancer Treatment

After the September release of her new lead single "Flower," Kylie Minogue has opened up about the inspiration behind the song. The track, which failed to make the cut on her tenth studio album X, was rerecorded for Kylie's just-released orchestral compilation album, The Abbey Road Sessions.

So really, the song is a survivor, like Minogue herself, who was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2005. "Flower" was actually penned by Kylie, along with co-writer Steve Anderson of Brothers in Rhythm, during the Aussie singer's chemotherapy treatment.

"I wrote it when I'd finished the first part -- the grueling part -- of cancer treatment," she told the BBC. "And I was told then, 'We need to inform you that we can't predict the future ... whether it will be possible for you [to have children]'."

"So I guess I wrote it as a question," the now 44-year-old singer says. "And it's still a question but it's a hopeful question and I just felt like it's a love letter to a child, a spirit, that may or may never be, just putting it out there."

"Distant child, My Flower/ Are you blowing in the breeze?/ Can you feel me? As I breathe life into you/ In a while my flower, somewhere in a desert haze/ I know one day, you'll amaze me," Kylie sings. Watch the "Flower" video below.
