Willow Smith Hair: Jada Pinkett Smith Facebook Post Slams Parenting Critics, Cultural Values

Willow Smith, the spunky daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and young star of "Whip My Hair" fame, is back in the spotlight for her hair. This time though, Willow's motheris defending her daughter's hairstyle choices -- and all her other choices for that matter.

As the critical comments about her daughter piled up, including her short hair or her tongue piercing, Jada took to Facebook to post a rebuttal to the trolling. She cites our culture's way of convincing girls that they don't own or have control over their own bodies as a negative force that she wants to have no impact on her daughter.

"The question why I would LET Willow cut her hair. First the LET must be challenged. This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don't belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination.

"I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair.

"It's also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother's deepest insecurities, hopes and desires. Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes a little girl should be. More to come. Another day."

Her rapper and movie star dad Will Smith has already declared in an interview with Parade that he wants his daughter to make her own decisions about her body and her image, not him or any other man.

I think it's great that Willow has the independence to choose her own hair style. And while I applaud Jada and Will for seeming to be great parents in most ways, I have to disagree that it's "okay" for a 12 year old to choose to get body piercing or tattoos. In fact, I don't know where Willow got this done, but in CA, you have to be 16 even with a parent's consent for a body piercing.

I don't agree with a 12 year old girl or boy getting a tongue ring and i'm a parent of 12 year old twins and it comes a time when u have to be the parent and not the friend.Thats why so many kids lose there way because mommy and daddy r being friends and not parents.I will say a prayer for Willow because she is crying out for help and know one is listening.

You are so right. Gosh a twelve year old child making those kinds of decisions when in fact she has no time on this earth to have had the experience to make a solid decision. That is why we as parents are here to guide and teach our children how to be respondsible young adults. Amen to you...msolloway40.....

there are certain things that a parent should speak up and there is another when a parent should just let there kids do.. the whole letting her cut her hair as she wish i think is great jada has a way of thinking that i love that her daughter body is her and no matter who says what girls should be or not is not up to everyone else but her daughter... at 12 getting her tongue ring i'm up in the air cause i'm not going to lie i got went behind my parents back and got mine done around that age but as i got old i realize just how silly that was and it was something that i look back at my youth and laugh that i did that.. thank god i never got a tattoo that i feel should wait till shes 21 cause that's for life. a ring can always be taken out and the hole closes so jada and will i think are doing what i would do with my kids.

Yea yea yea, what ever Jada. If I had a daughtor and she wanted to shave her hair & get a tongue piercing at the age of 12, I would simply say hell to the no, period. Willow has too much freedom for 12, she acts like she 22, and that bugs me. I don't like her, she rubs me the wrong way, and now I truly see why. Will & Jada needs to rethink their twisted way of parenting. It's bad enouf Willow is ugly and looks too much like Will, & now she added insult to ugly, and she looks worse, what the hell are Will and Jada thinking. Willow body belongs to her when she becomes 18. Until then Will and Jada should step in as parents, and tell her that she needs to stay in a kids place, and the same goes for her grown ass brother too.

How old are you? You started out like a person who has a brain cell or two until you said a 12 year old girl is ugly. The problems little girls have are because of people like you. If she looks like her dad so what; think he is good looking anyway. Why do you think looks have anything to do with who you really are, looks are based on a genetic pool; in most instances? We do not control the way we look, what we do control is who we are and who we become; easier for some than others yes. Willow is a beautiful young girl! So why don't you and your pretty self audition for the next American Top Model or whatever that show s called.
