Elton John, Malaysia Concert Protests: Icon Urged to Cancel Show Over Sexual Orientation

Elton John is set to bring his live show to Malaysia this Thursday (Nov. 29). However, conservative campaigners are demanding the pop icon rethink his plans to perform in the nation's capital of Kuala Lumpur. The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) had some harsh words for the openly gay musician, stating loud and clear their opposition to his concert plans.

"This concert must be cancelled," PAS youth-wing chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi told AFP. "Artists who are involved in gay and lesbian activities must not be allowed to perform in Malaysia as they will promote the wrong values."

The PAS chief said the group does not plan to take their anti-Elton protests to the streets, but "will instead demand that authorities cancel the immoral performance to protect our society from social degradation." In Malaysia, sodomy is a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

This isn't the first time Elton has faced opposition from the PAS. Despite the party's efforts last November (2011), the legend performed in the country to a sold-out crowd.

Just a few weeks ago, John and his partner David Furnish announced they were expecting their second child together via the same surrogate as their 2-year-old son Zachary.
