As 2012 comes to a close, Billboard has announced that this year's coveted Woman of the Year prize will go to none other than the Teenage Dreamer herself, Katy Perry.

"I thought my year was over!" Katy admitted to Billboard upon hearing the news. "I like to be viewed as a strong woman and I think that's what Billboard is basically saying," she added.

It's been a whirlwind year for Katy. She started off 2012 on a low note, with a divorce from now-ex husband Russell Brand. But the 28-year-old songstress managed to come out on top in her professional life, with the hit re-release album, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. "Part of Me," the lead single off the album, earned the pop star her seventh career No. 1.

Katy also made her silver screen debut with her 3D concert documentary "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

The singer was sure to acknowledge the amazing female musicians who have come before her and inspired her along the way, including Ella Fitzgerald and Alanis Morissette. "Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette -- every single song struck a chord, an emotional chord inside of me," she said.

"I'm excited for the next evolution -- it will be an evolution," Katy revealed, looking ahead.

The pop star will officially accept the honor at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event in New York City later today (Nov. 30).

If this is woman of the year, women are in trouble.

Woman of the year? one word- why? Everytime I hear her voice on the radio, I get annoyed, irritated and then change the station in my vehicle! Like chalk on a chalkboard-eeek!!!! Forget about it!

Way to lower the bar for women everywhere, Billboard!!! Next time pick a REAL woman, not a woman who the music industry created an image for and then sold to the masses.

You have a bad opinion of her, check out the video of her singing with Jodi DiPiazza. It may alter you opinion a bit.

last year's winner was Taylor Swift, before her Fergie, Beyonce' and the inaguaal winner was Ciara in 2008 - with those as the standard set, Katy elevates the award this year.

What I find interesting is last years woman-of-the-year (Sandra Bullock) was also newly divorced. I am not saying that a woman should stay in a marriaowever,ge no matter what. There are points of no return like physical abuse. I'm just wondering if there is a pattern regarding their yearly choice??
