"I was going through a divorce and the breakup of a family," Lopez tells Hollywood Life (via Us Weekly). "Which was devastating to me because family means everything to me. I had to turn that into something better. I thought, 'I don't want to just survive it, I want to come out better than that.' I didn't want to be the woman who stayed in bed for months."
So naturally, she decided to head out on the biggest concert trek of her career, spending the summer on a six-week, 20-show world tour! And she took her 4-year-old twins, Max and Emme, along for the ride.
"I knew I had to get through it," she says. "I'd dance every day, I'd work out, I'd say a little prayer and I still wouldn't feel any better. Then I'd go to bed and get up the next day and do it all again. It was a process, and it very gradually got a little easier ... I had to do it for my kids. I had to get through it for them."
J.Lo says her single "Dance Again," released in April 2012, helped lift her out of the darkness and gave her hope again. The song, was written by Lopez's tour co-headliner Enrique Iglesias, along with Pitbull and RedOne.
"I had to beg and beg Enrique to give it to me. I told him, 'That's my song.' And finally, he gave in," Jennifer reveals. "'Dance Again' became my anthem ... an expression of what I needed to do at that time in my life and for what I was taking on with [my career]. It was a beautiful metaphor that became my reality."
J.Lo's anthem has since become the title of her new greatest hits album, Dance Again ... the Hits, and a forthcoming 3D concert movie.
