Mix live TV with a few bubbly drinks on one of the biggest partying nights of the year and what are you bound to get? Awkward moments, of course!
Over the years, Times Square in New York City has seen its fair share of memorable New Year's Eve celebrations, and we compiled the best of 'em to look back on before we ring in 2013.
So 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ... check them out below.
We're pretty sure nothing gets more awkward than watching Lady Gaga oddly embracing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on stage right after the ball dropped, ringing in 2012 together. Oh, wait ... it can get more awkward -- like when the two actually share a long-paused KISS before deciding to dance to Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York." See the New Year's smooch that left crowd-goers with their jaws dropped at the 53 second mark.
And here's the awkward dance.
Speaking of kisses, we've got a whole lot of them. Hey, at least Gaga had someone to kiss that New Year's because that same night, Justin Bieber was seen making out with ... himself?! Even though the singer was dating Selena Gomez at the time, their relationship was still under wraps, leaving JB with his, uh, arm. See the solo action start at the 10 second mark.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the only awkward NYE moment for Justin, because he made our list again. But, at least Selena was with him this time. You see, it was minutes before 2010, a whole year before the two ever became "Jelena," and let's just say the two seriously lacked chemistry. At the 1:50 minute mark, Selena joins Justin as he serenades her to his hit "One Less Lonely Girl," and one slight problem -- Sel clearly doesn't know the words as she tries to sing along. There are a bunch of cute giggles, but between the somewhat-odd dance moves and hug in the end, where Selena looks about a good two feet taller than her future boyfriend, this exchange has to be their most awkward moment yet.
And then there's the midnight kiss that never, ever happened. After breaking up only a few months earlier (by phone), Taylor Swift was forced to ring in 2009 with ex Joe Jonas. Some time before the ball dropped, Tay sung "Forever & Always" (rumored to be penned about Joe) .... awkward enough? Then came midnight ... as the two exes stood mere inches away from each other. Joe has a blast celebrating with his bros and Ryan Seacrest, loving camera time, while Taylor stayed a bit in the background. The two did share a brief hug, but a makeup kiss was not in the plans. Oh, and who's in between them, you ask? Pal Demi Lovato, who Joe later dated after Taylor. Talk about a love triangle.
While we're on the topic of ex-couples who rang in the New Year together, let's not forget Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, who ruled the MTV airwaves during their "Newlyweds" days. Now that the two are divorced and each have a baby with their new partners, respectively, we doubt Jess and Nick will be reliving their 2004 NYE celebration. But luckily, we are. In the first video, Jess introduces her hubby before he sings lyrics like "take my hand and hold on tight." (Guess she wasn't listening?)
And as midnight hit, the two lovebirds shared a hardcore makeout session. Check it out at the 1:45 mark.
So if you find yourself in Times Square at midnight on NYE and you don't have a boyfriend, an ex, or an arm to kiss, what's a girl to do? Find a NYPD cop, duh. Jenny McCarthy did just that, smooching a "hot cop" and then asking him to rate the kiss on a 1-10 scale while cameras captured the action (this was just after she asked him what his name was post-kiss). Watch the awkwardness unfold at the 4:25 mark and 8:28 mark, when the two talk (unnecessarily) about the spontaneous smooch.
Back in 2000, "TRL" host Carson Daly was gearing up to ring in 2001 with Marilyn Manson when the rocker revealed that he was wearing rubber gloves so he was "prepared to do a gynecology exam on Mandy Moore." He explained, much to Carson's shock written all over his face, "I want to make sure everything checks out since she's becoming a woman." (Luckily, Mandy wasn't nearby or present to hear this). Carson tries to deflect the awkward comments, but dude, the damage is done. Check it out in the beginning of the video.
Carson's NYE run-in wasn't the only time we felt bad for a NYE host. Take Ryan Seacrest while ringing in 2008. He was joined by Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Carrie Underwood. At the 3:16 mark, as the classic NYE song "Auld Lang Syne" is played, Seacrest asks Carrie if she knows the song and to join in. Her quick response? "I don't!" Then, he tries to ask for Mi's help. "I don't!" she answers. The Jonas Brothers don't know the tune either, so Seacrest skips to a different topic. #NYEfail.
But the most awkward moment award goes to Anderson Cooper, who is taken by complete surprise while ringing in 2012 when comedian Kathy Griffin joins him on the CNN telecast, wearing nothing but a bra. Explaining she's inspired by Gaga, Cooper asks "Seriously??!" before holding up a sign that says "No Nudity" and muttering miffed comments. But then, he tries to lighten the sitch by telling her that she has a "Rockin' body." Um, can we just cut to commercial?
And what's the best way to cap off an awkward NYE list? With an awkward NYE kiss. Dick Clark (rest in peace), witnessed a lot of smooches over his four decades of hosting, but even this muah moment in 2003 was enough to catch him off guard. At the 3:10 mark, Clark is mid-sentence when the camera pans to a couple aggressively kissing, and Clark can't cover his surprise, saying "Woah, woah," in an unusual-frazzled tone for the host.
On that note, Happy New Year's Eve! Here's to a less-awkward 2013.
