Nelly Furtado Doesn't Want to Make Pop Music Anymore (VIDEO)

As Nelly Furtado hits the snow-covered road on the Canadian leg of her Spirit Indestructible tour which began Jan. 8, the B.C.-born singer says she's taking a detour from the North American pop scene to head in a more mature direction.

The 34-year-old mother had been away from the spotlight for the much of the past six years -- a not inconsequential time away considering her first hit "I'm Like a Bird" came out in 2000 -- but her hands haven't been idle. Furtado released a Spanish album in 2009 and has kept herself busy supporting various global causes that are near and dear to her, including Free the Children's initiatives to improve the state of education for girls around the world.

In September, Furtado released her fifth studio album The Spirit Indestructible. The record explores themes of nostalgia, personal growth, and even the Arab Spring in a song titled "Believers," displaying a clear lyrical departure from her 10-million-selling 2006 album Loose's rowdier club jams like "Promiscuous Girl" and "Maneater."

In an exclusive interview with AOL Music Blog, Furtado talks about why her songs don't sound the same as they once did and what she hopes to give her fans moving forward.

GET REAL!!! Nelly is very much still active in music. As a matter of fact, I'm still awaiting the release of Nelly Furtado's collaboration with Nelly on his next album, M.O. BTW, their recording is titled Headphones(Fly Away), an inspirational track and one of her favorites. 13 years and still counting for Nelly Furtado and now, with her current musical collaboration with Nelly(real name Cornell Haynes Jr.), she's poised to take off as a performer, once again. Some are saying their current musical collaboration will be good for both of them, especially after the respective disappointments of The Spirit Indestructable and his 5.0 At the same time, this collaboration has been years in the making and Headphones(Fly Away) is the first recording for both Nelly and Nelly Furtado together since 2001's What's Going On by the All-Star Tribute, co-produced by U2's Bono. All of this jive about Nelly Furtado not wanting to make pop music anymore is nothing more but pure B.S., and the person that started this blog should really be ashamed. BTW, Nelly's music transcends both pop as well as R&B, and I believe R&B radio will start spinning Headphones(Fly Away), before it makes it to mainstream pop radio. I can definitely see her collaborating more with Nelly and his St. Lunatics on future music recordings. She's recorded on his upcoming album, M.O. and in return, I can see him and his St. Lunatics recording on Nelly Furtado's next album, too. Right now, musically speaking, both Nellies can help each other out, and it could almost or maybe even be somewhat similar to her most recent collaboration with Timothy "Timbaland" Mosely- only time will tell. 13 years in music and I'm looking very forward to how both Nelly and Nelly Furtado can help each other out in their current musical collaboration. I really can't wait until Nelly's next album, M.O., where Nelly Furtado collaborates with him, finally comes out.
