And while there's some debate aout whether her latest hit "I Knew You Were Trouble" is about either one of her exes -- Harry Styles or John Mayer -- the singer is upfront about one thing: Styles definitely inspired her performance of the tune at the Brit Awards, where he was sitting nearby.
"It's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching," she tells U.K.'s Times Magazine.
Although some of the lyrics seem to be pointed at Mayer, Styles could've served as inspiration for the song as well.
Taylor was first spotted crushing on Styles in March 2012, where she was seen dancing to One Direction's hit "What Makes You Beautiful" at the Kids' Choice Awards. Taylor writes hidden messages in her CD booklet for each song (she capitalizes certain letters to spell out a sentence or word), and the secret code she chose for "I Knew You Were Trouble" is pretty telling -- "When you saw me dancing."
After the March run-in, which occurred during the time Taylor was working on her CD Red, Styles was seen with other girls and an anonymous source who talked to Vanity Fair said that an argument over a "friendly kiss" drove Styles and Tay apart for the summer before they linked back up in the fall.
For Styles' part, even he seemed to acknowledge that "I Knew You Were Trouble" was about him. While he and Taylor were dating, he got a new tattoo of a pirate ship that was eerily similar to the one that Tay's love interest had in the song's music video.
Even with the little hints Tay has given to Styles during her performances, he says it doesn't bother him.
"It's fine," he said in a recent interview. "She's a great performer and she's always good on the stage ... she's done it for a long time. She knows what she's doing on stage."
While her recent performances seemed to be influenced by her split with Styles (take her British accent during the Grammy Awards), Taylor told Times Magazine that not everything she does or wears or says is inspired by exes.
When asked if the green beanie she wore in her "22" video was a nod to Styles, who often wears a very similar one, Taylor said not so fast.
"I just like to wear a hat sometimes," she tells the mag. "I mean, sometimes I do things symbolically, as a dig. Other times, I'm just wearing a hat."
As for the surprise British accent during her Grammy performance, she quips, "I mean, here's the thing: not everything has to be explained to death, you know?"
