A cult band even by '90s alt-rock standards, many discovered Soul Coughing after their conspiracy-minded 'Unmarked Helicopters' highlighted the 1996 'X-Files' soundtrack 'Songs in the Key of X.' Those of us who investigated further uncovered a trove of should-be classics from the group’s first two albums, 'Ruby Vroom' and 'Irresistible Bliss.' Experimental jazz and hip-hop-inflected soundscapes grounded M Doughty's beat poetry-inspired lyrics, but as the singer’s recent book laid bare, feuding over songwriting credits led to a break-up that left the truth of Soul Coughing's greatness still out there. -- Joshua Ostroff
