Before groups like the Dum Dum Girls and Meg & Dia graced the scene, there was The Breeders, a female-fronted alternative rock set out of Dayton, Ohio. At center stage was Kim Deal and her twin sister Kelley, who shared vocals with support from Jose Medeles on drums and Mando Lopez, Todd the Fox and Cheryl Lyndsey all on guitar. The indie rockers were a welcome departure from the grungy guy bands of the '90s. Their infamous smash 'Cannonball,' off the 1993 sophomore LP, 'Last Splash' delivered a haunting bass line and funky vocals -- "Awooo, Awooo" – that even infiltrated the eardrums of the more pop-loving fans. -- Georgette Cline
