Michael Jackson Accepts an Imaginary Award

Michael Jackson's life-long career in the spotlight featured plenty of public gaffes, but one of MJ's most embarrassing moments of on-camera confusion occurred as he accepted an imaginary award at the 2002 MTV VMAs. The awards show was held on Aug. 29, which also happened to be MJ's birthday. Britney Spears took the stage to wish the King of Pop happy birthday, fondly yet informally, calling him the "artist of the millennium." When the birthday boy came out onstage, he launched into an acceptance speech for what he thought was the VMAs Artist of the Millennium Award. Oh, MJ. Everyone was nice enough to go along with the mix-up so as not to embarrass a legend on his birthday.
