Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier

Perhaps one of the most iconic items of pop star garb in music history, Madonna's conical bra, was the creation of none other than the famed French couturier, Jean Paul Gaultier. Gaultier started picking up on the underwear as outerwear trend from Parisian street style, and began crafting his own body-conscious creations in the 1980s. But it wasn't until he teamed up with Madonna that the look -- which symbolized sexual liberation, provocation and feminine strength -- became a definitive, signature moment in both parties' careers.

Gaultier went on to design costumes, including several custom variations of the brassier, for Madonna's 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. Jean Paul and Madonna have both called the resulting ensembles the product of true "collaboration." Their common vision of sexual freedom was further put on display when Madge ditched the bra all together for a now-infamous, bare-breasted catwalk cameo at the designer's fashion show in '92. Decades later, the duo reunited as Gaultier crafted costumes for Madonna's 2012 MDNA tour.
